SSL – Secure Socket Layer

Josh showed a diagram of how SSL works. This diagram can be found at http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1818 as well as other info on how to set up SSL in Apache2.

  • Thawte – a certificate authority – unlimited reissues. Owned by VeriSign+. SSL123 and SSLWebCert are identical, but 123 doesn't require as much verification as the other. EasySSL, Komodo, are other C.A.s. Thawte offers a free personal e-mail certificate.
  • Chain security – if any link in the chain is hacked, all links down the chain are broken.
  • Use cacert for rolling your own certificates.

Inkscape - http://www.inkscape.org/

Everything is an object. Like Adobe Illustrator. Josh loaded a picture in, traced it, and is able to manipulate various parts of the picture. Morph a dog's ear, for example. No jaggies when looking at characters. The files are saved in SVG (which is XML). Can be opened in Firefox without conversion to another image format. It also has some built in tutorials, which can be manipulated as you go through them.
