Software Freedom Day/InstallFest

September 10th, 2005 – Urbandale Library.

Kevin Smith has done a lot of leg work on this.

Things we still need:

  • Promo Materials - Signs, posters, banners, etc.
  • Promo places - Where will we promote Software Freedom Day?

Suggested promo places:

  • Ken will contact Steve Simpson (of Tech Corner?).
  • dmjuice.com
  • local computer stores
  • Clicks
  • local colleges (DMACC, Grand View, ISU, etc)
  • Greater Des Moines Covention and Visitors Bureau
  • Others?

File systems

Josh suggests using the default file system for whatever distribution you are using. For example, use ext3 for Redhat/Fedora, but ReiserFS for Suse. If he installs Qmail, he uses ReiserFS for that partition.

Other file systems:

  • XFS
  • JFS

Alternatives

Installing multiple versions of an application, and choosing which one to run. For example, you have 4 JVMs, but you want the default JVM to be v4.02. You can use “alternatives” to choose the default, and any app that uses the JVM will use the one you have set. *Alternatives* is available in Fedora.
